Box Flat Disaster Memorial
This year (2024) there were two occasions where you could find out about the huge explosion that rocked Ipswich on 31 July 1972 at Box Flat Coal Mine.
On Tuesday 30 July at Limestone Cinema, Riverlink, Ipswich, a free screening of Mark Parcell's film about the mine was held. It is a Virtual Reality Mine Presentation that takes viewers around the mine pithead and underground through the mine before the disaster struck.
The 53rd Annual Memorial Service will be held at the Box Flat Memorial, Swanbank Road, Swanbank at 10am on 31 July.
Families and friends of the miners involved are invited to attend each year, together with anyone else interested.
Morning tea is served after the service.
